Sleep Sack Attack!!

Nadia wanted to model the first one I made back in the Fall.
Madilyn on the other hand, did not want to sit still for a moment.

This time I made a few changes that made the sack much easier to put on.  An opening by the zipper.

As you can see, I am NOT a photographer!!! Especially on rainy days...sigh.
I used a straight stitch on the binding this time.

I can make this in 2 hours.  REAL easy if you have basic sewing skills.  The fleece makes a liner totally unnecessary.

The girls don't seem to mind watching the rain and the birds.
You will be seeing more of these sacks lately as this little stinker has discovered how to undo the zipper, hope out of bed and give her mother a work out.  But!! I have an idea of what to do about it!!
(IF I have time, as I have another HUGE project in the works right now that I will share in about a month.)  I discovered if I put her front zippered sleep sack on BACKWARDS - she can not reach it.
I was laughing triumphantly when I put her to bed yesterday.  Problem is - it barely fits her.
I share have to sew her one and design it with a zipper on the back.  If I get desperate I will be looking for these - anyone ever seen them?  Surely I am not the only Mom with jumpers??

Sleep in heavenly peace my little one, sleep in heavenly peace.
Thank you LORD for energetic, spirited and healthy children who keep me hopping!!!
Life would be boring otherwise.

Michelle's Quilt - The Tutorial that Wasn't

So I wanted to do a tutorial and I had it mostly planned out EXCEPT for the fact that I wing alot of my sewing.  (ie: my idea of "a plan" is a vague idea of how to start and then making it up as I go!)  So it didn't work out when it got to the measuring part and my squares were not the same size as my white squares - I couldn't fix it because they were smaller and not bigger.
It all worked out fine but for a tutorial - it would be irresponsible to direct people in doing what I did.
Here I will share - a half tutorial.  The idea is to inspire others and give you your own ideas on how to use up a jelly roll (20 - 2 1/2 inch wide strips) in your own beautiful creative way.  Once you have your squares - you are on your own.

I was inspired from a Hidden Wells (original hidden wells pattern) quilt I did about 6 years ago for a friend living far away. I loved the pattern back then and I still do!!!
It uses different size strips and a different technique later on.  I take no credit for this design as I am sure it's out there somewhere with a name.  This is not for my own credit. This is just to share what came out of my brain - the mistakes are quite unique to Gloria but I totally understand that the design may not be.

So take four of your strips from your jelly roll and sew them together like so.  Try to graduate light to dark or dark to light.
I made my first mistake by not doing that here.  Square off the end and then measure your width (in an ideal world they should measure 9 1/2 inches).  Press all seams in one direction.

Use that number to measure and cut your squares.  I think mine ended up being 9 and 1/4 inches.

Cut diagonally across like so.

And again the other way to create an X like so.

To keep things organized (especially with little ones about) I used this disposable casserole tray for all of my triangles. Keep them in the square shapes.

This is the fun part.  You can decide how you want to do this.
I decided to make my way counter clockwise and started to connect the top triangle with the left one.
Then, I sewed the left one to the bottom and on I went until all the triangles were sewn to make squares. .
The original Wells pattern I used labeled the squares A-D and combined different ones.  There are many combinations you can make up!!!

I then ended up with one O

And one X.  Sew all four squares together.  You'll have two left overs from the original set.  Set these aside for scrappy squares if you wish.

At this part I pressed seams open to help with the bulk.

I enjoyed free motion quilting in the white squares.  I used my old machine (I was under the gun to get this done and didn't know the new one yet) and that was a good lesson to me why I needed a new one!!

I alternated my squares with white ones so that I could use up my whole jelly roll.  If you had two jelly rolls (of 20 strips each) you could do a more kaleidoscope look with just the colored squares.

I also had some fun and made some pinwheels.

I had left over pieces and then I made these scrappy ones.

I used more of the strips on the back so I could fold over for an easy scrappy binding. You can't see it in this picture unfortunately.  You can see it a bit on the square pictures.
I gave this to my sister Michelle because the jelly roll matched her living room perfectly!!!
Have fun!!

Christmas - 2014

This guy was our delicacy this year :).  I bought him frozen - not sure I could cook a live one.
We decided that we needed to do this every year - it was so yummy!!!

Two very excited boys.

See the fire in Peter's eyes??

Peter really wants to be a soccer goalie so the gloves were really well received.

Madilyn had to help Aleana with all her presents and Aleana HAD to help Madilyn with hers.
It was cute.

New games are a great way to stay occupied for the rest of the holidays.

New pajamas need to be put on right away.

Mommy always needs help opening her presents - especially if they are from you.

The fairy wings she ALWAYS wanted.

The 3 - stooges or is it scrooges?

Our 3 princesses

How it all started...

and where the evening ends...
Aleana and Ethan helped Will buy me a new sewing machine!!! A Janome 60QC
(Quilter's Companion)
It's awesome!!!  Now that I have things figured out I can't believe how much faster it is and so much quieter and just more handy dandy in so many little ways.  It's going to be used often!!
Will asked me if it's the one I wanted...the answer is no because I never had my eyes on anything.  Thankfully, or I would have been a fairly bitter woman.
My 1950s Eaton's special mostly worked fine- when I wasn't having problems with the tension or with the feed dogs that never went down.  I was too scared (and embarassed) to take it in to be serviced because I didn't want to admit to another sewist that I had never in 17 years had it serviced - gasp!!.  So yah, it worked fine.
I don't mean to brag or gloat or whatever but I am just very grateful and thankful that I can do smoother quilting and 60!!!!  other stitches.
Did I say that I was pretty stoked about this???
Thank you Aleana, Ethan and Will - I am so happy and I feel very loved that you bought me such a special gift.  You are my superstars!!!
